What Causes Acne?

Acne is a long-term skin condition generally associated with breakouts of whiteheads, pimples & greasy skin and in some severe cases can lead to scarring. Sometimes follicles overproduce skin cells, which then leads to pores becoming blocked. Sebum (oil) which normally drains off the surface of the skin becomes trapped. This creates an environment for bacteria to thrive in. This process causes acne to form.

Whilst acne is a treatable skin condition, not all treatments are as successful as others.

Why do I have acne?

A degree of acne affects nearly everyone between the ages of 15-17 and it has been well documented that genetics have a prominent role too.
  • 15-20% of young people will experience moderate-severe acne
  • 85% prevalence rate in 12-24 year age group
  • 78% of girls between 8-12 have acne
  • 64% of 20-29 and 43% of 30-39 have visible acne
  • 3% of men and 5% of women still had a degree of acne aged 40-49
  • Myths Around Acne?

Since 2005, studies have shown “no robust evidence that acne is caused or worsened by a lack of hygiene.” There may be a possible link between dairy intake and acne however more studies are needed to prove this. There are no proven links between acne and the intake of:
  • Chocolate
  • Fat
  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Vitamin
  • High number of calories
